വേദങ്ങളാണ് ഭാരതത്തിലെ ആസ്തികദര്ശനങ്ങളുടെയെല്ലാം പരമമായ പ്രമാണങ്ങള്. നാസ്തി വേദാത് പരം ശാസ്ത്രം (വേദങ്ങളേക്കാള് ഉല്കൃഷ്ടമായ ശാസ്ത്രം വേറെയില്ല) എന്ന് അത്രിസ്മൃതി ഉദ്ഘോഷിക്കുന്നു. മറ്റു സ്മൃതികളും പുരാണങ്ങളുമെല്ലാം ഐക്യകണ്ഠേന ഇതിനെ ഏറ്റുപറയുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നതുകൊണ്ട് ഭാരതീയര്ക്ക് വേദങ്ങളേക്കാള് പ്രമാണമായി വേറെയൊന്നുമില്ലെന്നു സംശയാതീതമായി തെളിയുന്നു. വേദങ്ങള് ശ്രുതി എന്നും അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. നാലു വേദങ്ങളുടെയും അന്ത്യഭാഗത്തെ വേദാന്തമെന്നും ഉപനിഷത്തെന്നും പറയുന്നു. ഉപനിഷത്തുക്കളാണ് വേദസാരം. അതുകൊണ്ടുതന്നെയാണ് ഉപനിഷത്തുകളെ ശ്രുതിശിരസ്സ് (വേദങ്ങളുടെ ശിരസ്സ്) എന്നും വിളിക്കുന്നത്. ഭാരതീയദര്ശനത്തില് ഉപനിഷത്തുകള്ക്കുള്ള പ്രാധാന്യമാണ് ഇത് വിളിച്ചോതുന്നത്.
അനന്താ വൈ വേദാഃ (വേദങ്ങള് അനന്തങ്ങളാണ്) എന്നൊരു ചൊല്ലുണ്ട്. അപ്പോള് ഉപനിഷത്തുക്കളും അസംഖ്യങ്ങളായിരുന്നിരിക്കണം. എന്നാല് ഇന്ന് പ്രധാനമായി 108 ഉപനിഷത്തുക്കളാണ് ഉള്ളതായി കണക്കാക്കുന്നത്. ഇവയിലുള്പ്പെടുന്ന മുക്തികോപനിഷത്തില് ഈ 108 ഉപനിഷത്തുകളുടെ പേരുകള് രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഇവയില് തന്നെ വേദങ്ങളുടെ താല്പര്യമെന്താണെന്ന് സ്ഥാപിക്കുവാനായി വേദവ്യാസന് രചിച്ച ബ്രഹ്മസൂത്രത്തില് ആവര്ത്തിച്ച് ഉദ്ധരിക്കപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുള്ളവയും, ആദിശങ്കരന് ഭാഷ്യം രചിച്ചിട്ടുള്ളവയുമായിട്ടുള്ള ഉപനിഷത്തുക്കള് പത്തെണ്ണമാണ്. അവയ്ക്ക് മറ്റ് ഉപനിഷത്തുക്കളേക്കാള് പ്രാമാണ്യം ഏറുമെന്ന് കരുതപ്പെടുന്നു. അവ ദശോപനിഷത്തുക്കളെന്ന് അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. പൊതുവെ വേദാന്തവിദ്യാര്ത്ഥികള് ശ്രീമദ് ഭഗവദ്ഗീത, ദശോപനിഷത്തുക്കള്, ബ്രഹ്മസൂത്രം എന്നീ മൂന്നും ഉള്ക്കൊള്ളുന്ന പ്രസ്ഥാനത്രയം മാത്രമാണ് പഠിക്കാറുള്ളത്.

It is a well known fact that there are only four vedas – Rig, Yajus, Sama & Atharva. Pranava is not the name of a Veda. Pranava is synonym of the sacred syllable ‘Om’. It is said in ‘Prasthanabheda’ of Madhusudana Saraswati, “ऋग्वेदो यजुर्वेदः सामवेदोऽथर्ववेद इति वेदाश्चत्वारः।” i.e. The Vedas are four in number—Rgveda, yajurveda, sAmaveda and atharvaveda.
